Communication Skills for Teachers - 2nd E-learning Refletion

After being through so many lessons of communication skills, I think the module has benefited me greatly in terms of structuring my speech/message and the appropriate formats & words to use for different occasions.

I used to be long-winded in the past, which may cause my audience to lose focus, finding it hard to comprehend the content or sieve out important information required for action to be taken. PAC (purpose, audience and context) is a very useful framework in helping me structure my speech/message. The framework will ensure I cover all aspects required and yet keeping the message concise. It is also important to categorize the content into main topics and sub-topics, beginning the main topics with keywords such as "firstly", "secondly" or "lastly". This will aid my audience in picking up the information and keeping track of the progress of the speech/message.

Having good written communication skills is equally important. Since most schools communicate through e-mails, it is essential that we as teachers have adequate skills to write e-mails that also fulfill that PAC framework. Comparing written communication with spoken communication, the former lacks of information such as physical gestures, facial expressions, volume, pitch and tone, which can easily lead to misinterpretation and misunderstanding. The choice of words play a critical role in determining the general tone of the message and hence, it is important to use the correct choice of words for different audience group.

In general, I think the module has given me great opportunities to practise and boost my confidence in presenting my ideas.
